History

A rich history as a free workspace for makers.

The entrance

From 2006 onwards, Robert Ceelen ran the Theaterhuis of the iHTs in Aubenton as a free workspace for emerging and established makers. It was a place where one could research, rehearse and create in complete tranquillity. The house itself was a remarkable project: it was entirely rebuilt with reused materials — found on the street or donated by supporters — and shaped over many years by young people who poured their time, energy and craftsmanship into it.

With this approach, iHTs achieved its original aim: to create an inspiring, accessible workspace where new art could come into being. Over those years the Theaterhuis welcomed countless makers and left a lasting impression — on a great many Dutch guests and on Aubenton itself.

On that rich history we now build further with Kunstenhuis Aubenton — a new chapter for the building, with new possibilities, but with the same heart for makers and for art. We have made a start with a new roof.

With the iHTs, Robert Ceelen has also begun a new chapter, as a fund for young makers. You can find information about it — and a fine retrospective of the iHTs in Aubenton — at iHTs.
